I created this site as I realised one day that I had hundred of pages of useful info, references, presentations, graphics and data that was sitting rotting on my server.
Much of this I learned in my work for a multinational material corporation, however, much of what I learned is public domain, so it makes complete sense to share what I can.
I am a chemical engineer by training, graduating with a Batchelor or Science in Chemical Engineering in 1995, followed by a two-year research-based Masters degree which was focussed on advanced process control (including AI, before it was sexy!)
My early career was spent looking at the efficiency of processes around the mining industry, starting with advanced control, moving to improved sensors, then broadening to “lean manufacturing” a philosophy that rethinks everything to avoid waste.
Then I spend a few years away from the heavy industries, working in the City of London on web applications, using what I knew from industrial control to make things like business directories (anyone remember Thomson Directories?) and an early version of internet banking for private banks.
But I hated being stuck in front of a computer, so I moved back to industry where I have been for the last 20-odd years, designing production systems in the materials sector, making engineered materials for automotive, batteries, coatings, and pretty much everything all around us.
The last 10 years have seen me shift focus from “safety and efficiency” to broader “sustainability” targets, so carbon footprint, circularity, water demand and much more, during which it has been my privilege to meet and work with many amazing people who have taught me everything I know, and I hope to share with you!
